Penyeludupan Senjata Api di Sempadan Malaysia-Thailand dan Ancamannya Ke Atas Keselamatan Insan (Small Arms and Light Weapon Smuggling at Malaysia-Thailand Border and Its Threats Towards Human Security)

Abstract


Over the years, Southeast Asia region faces numerous conflicts and wars. The situation has worsened with the dumping of firearms after the Cold War. Malaysia is smacked in between its neighbours in conflict. Coupled with its strategic location along the world’s busiest trading waterways, Malaysia is no exception to be affected by transnational crime activities and trafficking of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW). The strict implementation of firearms laws in Malaysia doesn’t seems to take effect with the continuous influx of illegal SALW over its land and waters. The objectives of this article is to discuss human security concepts, factors that promote the increase of SALW smuggling into Malaysia and its threats on human security. This study employs a qualitative method whereby primary data is obtained through interviews with Malaysian and Thailand enforcement and security agencies, prisoner of SALW related, informer and non-governmental organization, fieldwork in Malaysia and border of Malaysia-Thailand, literature methods and document analysis. The study found that the internal and external factors have influenced the increased of SALW smuggling and its crime related activities that could jeapordised on the human security of Malaysia.
