Abstract

Abstract: Educating and raising children with autism is very challenging. Parents need to sacrifice a lot of money, energy and time to meet the needs of children with autism. Parents who are unable to meet the needs of children with autism are more likely to experience burnout. Many studies have focused on children with autism, but not many have looked in depth at burnout and social support among parents of children with autism. This study aims to explore the factors that cause burnout and examine forms of social support among parents of children with autism. This study uses a qualitative approach and phenomenological methods to understand and describe the experiences of parents of children with autism. A total of 10 informants were involved and this study uses purposive sampling techniques and in-depth interviewing methods. The data was then analysed using thematic analysis techniques. There are five main factors that cause burnout among parents of children with autism, namely household income, awareness and involvement of parents, living environment, behaviour of children with autism and acceptance of children with autism. The results of the study also found that forms of social support can be divided into two - tangible and intangible. This study concludes that parents need to be given comprehensive support and provided with detailed information regarding the care of children with autism to reduce the tendency of burnout.
