Abstract: Healthcare volunteers are an important component of human resources in government and nongovernmental organisation humanitarian relief missions (NGOs). Nonetheless, the needs and motivations of healthcare volunteers are still unsatisfactory. Therefore, the objective of this study is to identify the needs and motivations of healthcare volunteers in order to improve the quality of humanitarian relief missions. This at once elevates the importance of healthcare volunteers to social well-being and community development. The qualitative approach was used with in-depth interviews with five healthcare volunteers from the Majlis Kanser Nasional (MAKNA) and the Yayasan Sukarelawan Siswa (YSS), where’s the purposive sampling method was used and the data was analysed using thematic methods. The findings revealed that the themes of the need for psychosocial support, intensive training and adequate resources as well as assistance supplies became the main needs of healthcare volunteers. Meanwhile, career in healthcares, identity formation, and volunteer experiences enhance their motivation in relief missions. This study contributes to the successful factors of the involvement of healthcare volunteers, so that their role continues to be strengthened in providing assistance in humanitarian missions.
