Reading Problems in Government Primary School Students in Brunei Darussalam: A Case Study
Abstract
This research was based on the problems with reading that the primary six pupils from the government schools encountered in Negara Brunei Darussalam. The qualitative method that used the multicase multiplesite approach. In this approach, the participants consisted, four pupils, four parents and six teachers from four different primary schools in Negara Brunei Darussalam, were interviewed in depth. Discussion, conclusion and summarization of data were done by analyzing theme, sub-theme, and the research questions. Reliability the data were checked by group of supervisors. Cohen’s Kappa coefficient was used to measure the qualitative item statistically, where as Nvivo 7 used to analyze the data. The findings were reported in two parts; the profiles of the schools and participants in the research, as well as the report on the research questions. From this research, it is found that the factors that contributed to the inability to read efficiently in the government school primary six students are: (1) individual factor, (2) psychological factor, (3) method of teaching, (4) lesson periods, (5) environmental factor, and (6) text books.
