The Validity and Reliability of the Fashion Design Competency Instrument
Abstract
The competency instrument of the Fashion Design was used to determine the level of competency among the teaching staff at the Skills Training Institute (STI). This study was conducted to select items that are valid, fair, and of quality. The Fashion Design Competency (RFP) instrument consists of 117 Likert scale items to measure two constructs with 13 sub-constructs. The fi rst construct is competency skill with six sub-constructs which are creating clothes design, sewing, computer, patterns making, design and promotional. Whereas, the second construct is competency knowledge with 7 subconstructs which are design, marketing/trade, history/culture, production, knowledge of selection of clothing, clothing care and knowledge of assessment of textiles. The instrument was administered to test the instruments on 30 people who are STI instructors teaching in the fi eld of fashion design and clothing. For the reliability, validity and suitability of individual items, the Rasch measurement model was used. Thus, the Winsteps software version 3.72.3 was used to analyze the data. Results showed the reliability of the respondents was .98 and .95 for items in Likert scale. Findings also showed that 14 items were found misfi t. These items can be dropped or improved so that the instrument is fair, more equitable and more reliable to all respondents
