Abstract

ABSTRACT: Game-based learning refers to 21st century education methods that can assist teachers in enhancing their creativity in teaching and learning processes in the classroom. In Malay Language education, integrating game-based learning has become an important part of improving teachers’ pedagogical practices while supporting parts of the application of edutainment elements. Although the effectiveness of GBL has often attracted many scholars’ attention from time to time, studies on teachers’ perceptions, beliefs, and challenges faced in implementing play methods in teaching and learning are still lacking. Therefore, this paper attempts to open a discussion on the literature related to the concept of GBL, advantages, and challenges to the application of GBL methods in teaching and learning Malay Language. In addition, steps to assist the application of game-based learning methods and discussions in teaching and learning the Malay Language are also presented. Teacher challenges such as additional workload burdens, lack of time, difficulty in selecting appropriate game materials, lack of knowledge, training on GBL, and lack of motivation to use this method need to be addressed. Hence, they are encouraged to discuss and obtain professional expertise in using games, especially to produce more current digital game-based teaching aids. In addition, support from administrators and parents is crucial for this method to be implemented successfully. Other suggestions include the provision of guidance materials such as game development modules and game-based teaching aids to meet the syllabus requirements in Malay Language teaching and learning. Teachers are also encouraged to participate in professional workshops to implement GBL methods. Through this paper, it is hoped that Malay Language teachers can achieve the set learning goals more effectively and enjoyably through GBL methods.
