Abstract

ABSTRACT: Previously, sago production gained signifi cant economic importance in Sarawak. However, this production declined recently when this commodity’s market price fell. This study is an attempt to describe the terminology of Metroxylon sago among the Melanau community. The description of the sago terms divided into four categories, namely: (1) The plant and its taxonomy; (2) The Harvesting Process; (3) Processing sago and its products; and, (4) Ethno-cultural Terms. The elaboration covers the aspect of linguistics, etymology, ethnography and technology. The research which based on data collected in a qualitative research project, featuring face to face interviews in situ learnt that many of these lexical items gradually ignored by the younger generation. Probably, certain terms will become archaic words in the future.
