Abstract

Abstract: The development of social media and the internet has redefined beauty standards, creating pressure to conform and leading to an increase in eating disorder behaviours such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. This study aims to examine the relationship between body appreciation, psychological well-being and eating disorder behaviours among students at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). This quantitative study employs a survey method with simple random probability sampling to obtain 388 UKM students, consisting of 127 male and 261 female students. The Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) was used to measure the level of body image appreciation, the Psychological Well-being Scale (PWBS) was used to measure psychological well-being and the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire 6.0 (EDE-Q 6.0) was used to measure eating disorder behaviours. The results show that body image appreciation as well as psychological well-being had a significant negative relationship with eating disorder behaviour. Overall, this study is important for educational institutions and policymakers as it provides empirical findings on body image issues among students. These findings can be used to develop interventions to enhance positive body image acceptance and reduce eating disorder behaviours. Furthermore, stakeholders such as university counselling services and policymakers can utilize these study results to implement more effective programs and policies that support student mental health and well-being.
